3. Repositories in the West Midlands with NGO material:
Altogether, at the time of writing, there are 142 repositories in the West Midland region listed in ARCHON. A full list of West Midland repositories is available online.
It is possible to see a list of the archives of the 500+ "Societies and Associations" that have deposited their records in a repository in the West Midlands by visiting the NRA website (Advanced Search / Organisations Index) and then choosing "Societies and Association" in the "Category" drop-down menu and then "West Midlands" as county and press "search". On 5 January 2007, 541 organisations were listed there, ranging from local branches of Amnesty International (Bournville and Wolverhampton branches) and the Anti-Apartheid Movement (Birmingham branch) to the Birmingham Society for Administering Comfort to Poor Lying-in Women, the Association of Friends of National Childrens Homes, the Wolverhampton Society for the Blind and the Young Womens Christian Association: Wolverhampton.
The following table gives an indication of the number of collections of organisations held by major repositories in the Midlands (only those repositories that have collections on more than one organisation were included in the following table). Most of the organisations listed below are outside of DANGO's remit, or local branches of national organisations, but the table was intended to give an idea of the breadth of archives of charities or non profit, NGOs. The seeming discrepancy between the numbers of "Societies and Associations" given above and the following table (which contain a much higher number of organisations) is due to the fact that the "Organisations" and "Societies and Association" categories defined by the NRA are two different categories.
To this list can be added the archives of the following organisations: the Camping and Caravanning Club Archive, the National Association for Environmental Education, the National Christian Education Council, the Omnibus Society, the Townswomen's Guilds.
