| Background Information | The Cremation Society of Great Britain exists to promote the cremation of the dead. The Society was established by Sir Henry Thompson, whose key motive was to find a solution to the sanitary dangers of traditional burial. The Society established a crematorium in Woking, which was finally opened, following various legal challenges to cremation, in 1885. In 1902 official recognition was given to the practice, through an Act of Parliament.
