| Background Information | The Democracy Movement is an non-party political campaign opposed to British membership of the supranational European Union (EU), wishing to see a reversion to intergovernmental cooperation between independent nation states. It is the successor organisation to Sir James Goldsmith's Referendum Party, which made a high-profile intervention in the 1997 general election campaign, contesting 547 seats, but winning just 2.6% of the vote. The party's campaign was not explicitly eurosceptic, but rather argued for a referendum to be held on continued EU membership. It was renamed the Referendum Movement, before adopting the current name. Company no. 3673846.
