The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a personal development scheme for young people aged fourteen to twenty-five, covering elements such as service to the community, the development of skills, physical recreation and undertaking expeditions. A pilot scheme for boys was launched in 1956, and for girls two years later, with the award as it now stands launched in 1969. It now runs in more than 80 countries worldwide and has been granted ECOSOC Roster Consultative Status since 1991. Source: www.theaward.org
