| Background Information | Emmaus UK is a homelessness charity, and the umbrella body for Emmaus Communities in the United Kingdom. The independent Communities assist the homeless by providing both work and long-term accommodation, typically through a communal home supported by a small business.
Emmaus was founded by French Priest Abbe Pierre in 1949, based upon the principles of self-reliance, mutual respect and acceptance, and assistance for those less fortunate. The concept has since spread worldwide. The first Emmaus community in the United Kingdom, in Cambridge, was established in 1990.
Emmaus UK is affiliated to Emmaus International.
