| Background Information | The English Speaking Union (ESU) exists to use the English language as a tool for the promotion of international understanding, this broader remit replacing an original focus on relations between the United States and the British Commonwealth. The Union, with more than 50 international branches, organises educational and cultural exchange activities. The Union was formed in 1918 by Evelyn Wrench, with Winston Churchill as an early chairman. The Union has had ECOSOC Roster Consultative Status since 1987.
