| Background Information | Help the Aged is a major charity combating disadvantage amongst older people in the UK and internationally. The body lobbies and campaigns, provides services for older people, and maintains a network of almost 400 high street shops. Help the Aged was established by Cecil Jackson-Cole, as Help the Aged Refugees, with a focus on refugees from Yugoslavia, Bangladesh and Rwanda. Overseas work was increasingly matched by activity in the UK, and the charity opened its first shop in 1984. In 1983, HelpAge International was established, to coordinate the international activities of NGOs working in the sector. Help the Aged has national offices in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and is one of the member agencies of the Disasters Emergency Committee. In September 2008, Age Concern England and Help the Aged have announced that they will be creating a new charity in April 2009. They are now called Age UK. Charity no. 272786, company no. 01263446.
