| Background Information | The Humane Slaughter Association (HSA), the working name of the Humane Slaughter Association and Council of Justice to Animals (HSA & CJA), is an animal welfare charity concerned with the sale, transportation and slaughter of farm animals. Campaigns have included the distribution of humane stunners to replace the pole-axe, purpose-built markets, and opposition to live animal export. The Association has seen significant legislative progress in its campaign areas, for example the 1933 Slaughter of Animals Act. As indicated by the long official title, the current organisation was formed through the merger of an existing Humane Slaughter Association with the Council of Justice to Animals, which had been established in 1911.
