| Background Information | The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) is an educational charity (no. 223989). Set up in 1952 by the Royal Institute of International Affairs, the IRR became independent in 1958 following the Notting Hill race riots.
The IRR became a more radical organisation after 1972, following the appointment of Ambalavaner Sivanandan as director.
The IRR established the Runnymeade Trust as a campaigning organisation.
In 1971 the Institute of Race Relations Research and Development Trust (charity no. 263091) was founded.
