| Background Information | Environmental Protection UK is an environmental charity that campaigns, lobbies, undertakes public education, and supports pollution control work of all kinds, from noise and light to greenhouse gases. The current organisation was formed through the merger of the Coal Smoke Abatement Society and the Smoke Abatement League. It played a major role in the lobbying that led to the 1956 Clean Air Act, a pioneering piece of environmental legislation, which followed the devastating London smog of 1952.
