| Background Information | "SJAG was formed during the United Nations Decade for Women 1976-85. It produced the Scottish Plan of Action which set out the changes women in Scotland wanted in order to improve their quality of life and has since encouraged action to achieve those changes by the year 2000. SJAG also monitors government action in implementing the United Nations Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women and in 1989 was invited by the Women's National Commission to be the umbrella organisation for women's organisations in Scotland" (source: Baberis, McHugh, and Tyldesley, 2000, Encyclopedia of British and Irish Political Organisations: Parties, Groups and Movements of the Twentieth Century, p446, entry 1661).
