| Background Information | The SCVO, the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, is the umbrella body for Scotland's voluntary sector, promoting co-operation and best practice.
The SCVO became an independent body in 1939, emerging out of the National Council of Social Service (now the NCVO).
The SCVO also generates new NGOs, with Age Concern Scotland and Citizen's Advice Scotland both having started life as SCVO committees.
Originally called the Scottish Council for Social Service, in 1983 the SCVO became the Scottish Council for Community and Voluntary Organisations (SCCVO), with the working title Voluntary Action for Scotland. The current name was adopted in 1986.
