| Background Information | The Board of Deputies of British Jews is the representative body of British Jewry, with approximately 300 deputies being elected from synagogues and community groups. The Board exists to protect and develop the interests, religion and customs of the Jewish community. In 1817, the then London Committee of Deputies of British Jews merged with the Ashkenazi community's Select Committee for Public Affairs. It became increasingly prominent in the 19th century, under the leadership of Moses Montefiore. In 1936, the Board established the Jewish Defence Committee, to meet the threat of the British Union of Fascists. In 1975, it established the National Council for Soviet Jewry, (later the Council for Jews in the Former Soviet Union). Source: www.bod.org.uk |
