| Background Information | The Gypsy Council for Education, Culture, Welfare and Civil Rights (a.k.a. the Gypsy Council) exists to combat the hostility faced by Gypsy communities. An original concentration on education rights has been expanded to cover racism, official attitudes and site provision. The Council plays liaison, mediation and lobbying roles, as well as providing an advice service and a media point-of-contact. The Gypsy Council is affiliated to the International Romani Union. The current name was adopted in 1991. Source: www.btinternet.com/~thegypsycouncil (accessed on 21/08/2007; website closed as of April 2009) |
