| Background Information | The Ramblers' Association is a charity (no. 1093577) focussed on promoting walking in Britain, improving access for walkers, and co-ordinating a nationwide network of local Ramblers groups. The Ramblers have been leading members of the right-to-roam campaign, going back to the 1932 mass trespass at Kinder Scout in the Peak District. Access for walkers was improved by the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, and the 1968 Countryside Act, and then the freedom to roam on mountain, moor, heath and down was secured in the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. As an umbrella body, the Ramblers replaced the National Council of Ramblers Federation. Sources: www.ramblers.org.uk; Cook & Waller 1994 vol 1 |
