| Background Information | The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) was established in order to prevent discrimination against disabled people and to positively promote equality for the (at that time) 10 million people in Britain who had rights under the Disability Discrimination Act (1995, 2005). Indeed their goal was "a society where all disabled people can participate fully as equal citizens" and the Commission worked with key stakeholders to find practical solutions for everyone to further this aim. The DRC offered a helpline and establised several action groups (mental health and learning disabililties) as well as a number of equality schemes (race, gender, disability). It also campaigned to strengthen the law by organising public campaigns, such as our Open 4 All campaign, which aimed to change policy, practice and awareness of disability issues, and by producing policy statements and research on disability issues, and publications on rights and good practice for disabled people, employers and service providers. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) took over the work of the DRC on 1 October 2007 (source: archived DRC site)
