| Background Information | YWCA works with young women who are vulnerable due to poverty, abuse, or discrimination, providing support and opportunities in 18 local centres. As such, YWCA is similar to, but separate from, YMCA. YWCA was founded by nineteenth century Christian social reformers Miss Emma Robarts and Mrs Arthur Kinnard, although it is no longer an explicitly Christian organisation. In 2002, YWCA became the organisation's official name, rather than simply an acronym. In 2003, YWCA Scotland split from YWCA Great Britain to become an independent organisation. The latter body continues as an umbrella for the England and Wales, and Scotland, branches. Source: www.ywca-gb.org.uk |
