| Background Information | Afghanaid is a grassroots development organisation, working with rural communities in Afghanistan. Initially based in the Pakistan city of Peshawar, and later moving to Kabul, the organisation has broadened from an original focus on famine relief to a programme embracing agricultural development, emergency relief, and dealing with the legacy of the many years of conflict Afghanistan has suffered.
Afghanaid emerged out of the Afghanistan Support Committee, part of a wider response to the refugee crisis triggered by the 1979 Soviet invasion.
