| Background Information | The Africa Centre is a London-based charity established, in its own words, "to create greater awareness among British and other European people about developments in Africa and its diaspora", with a particular focus on the promotion of "cultural, economic and socio-political initiatives in Britain and the rest of Europe that assist in the development of Africa." The Centre originated in the work of what is now Progressio, the Catholic development agency, and during the 1960s onwards acted particularly as a UK platform for African liberation politics, alongside being a major cultural centre. Charity no. 313510, company no. 683989. Sources: www.africacentre.org.uk; Cook Routledge Guide to British Political Archives 2006 |
