| Background Information | "APDA, founded in 1988, is the UK's only pan-disability organisation that is set up, managed and run by Asian people with in-depth knowledge and personal experience of disability and caring. It is a non-governmental community organisation, with the following main aims and objectives: to provide needs-led and user-led culturally-appropriate services that mainstream services are unable to provide because of their lack of advanced expertise in the culturally-related context of Asian disabled people, their carers and families; to work in partnership and in collaboration with service planners and other mainstream bodies to help incorporate the particular needs of APDA's client groups in service planning and other programmes that affect their lives; to act as a resource for Asian disabled people and their carers and families for consultation, peer support, exchange of information and ideas, etc and as facilitators in their social development." APDA has been granted special consultative status in the United Nations in 2007. Source: www.apda.org.uk |
