Background Information

Describing itself as "the national charity for under-supported young people", Rainer runs a wide range of projects nationwide, including providing supported accommodation, focussing on education and skills, tackling criminal behaviour, and supporting young people with families. The current organisation was formed through the 1997 merger of the Royal Philanthropic Society and the Rainer Foundation, although its roots go back more than two centuries. The Royal Philanthropic Society was established in 1788, as the Philanthropic Society, whilst the Rainer Foundation began life in the 1870s as the London Police Court Mission (LPCM). In December 2006 Rainer incorporated Communities that Care, a charity working in the same field, established in 1997 by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Prior to this, Rainer had also incorporated the DIVERT Trust, a mentoring charity, in 2002, as well as the National Leaving Care Advisory Service (NLCAS) the following year.
