| Background Information | Refuge is a ground-breaking women's charity, providing protection from domestic violence since it established the world's first women's refuge in Chiswick in 1971. Alongside the provision of refuges, the charity now provides a free helpline in collaboration with the Women's Aid Federation, and outreach services. It also undertakes training, campaigning and lobbying in order to raise public awareness of the issue. The current name was adopted in 1993, to reflect the organisation's national profile.
