In its own words, the "St Andrew's Ambulance Association seeks to preserve the lives of people in Scotland by making available a First Aid service and by teaching First Aid throughout the country." The Association was formed in Glasgow, by doctors and businessmen concerned at the rising number of injuries that was accompanying the city's rapid industrialisation. The St. Andrew's and Red Cross Scottish Ambulance Service, (later the St Andrew's Scottish Ambulance Service), provided the ambulance service for Scotland from 1918 until 1974, when the service was absorbed into the National Health Service.
