| Background Information | Toynbee Hall is a renowned social project in the East End of London, describing itself as producing "practical innovative programmes for young people and families, adults, and older people, to meet the needs of local people, improve conditions and enable communities to fulfil their potential." It was founded by Anglicans Samuel and Henrietta Barnett, who had been working in the deprived parish of St Jude's since the 1870s. In the course of their work, they evolved the idea of a settlement, bringing the most privileged to work amongst the least. Toynbee Hall, the name commemorating academic Arnold Toynbee, opened in 1884, with future residents including Clement Attlee and William Beveridge. Although commonly known under the current name for many years, the official title of Universities Settlement in East London is only formally dropped in 1999. Charity no. 211850, company no. 20080.
