| Background Information | The British Red Cross Society is a humanitarian and disaster relief charity (no. 220949), famed for its role as a neutral actor in conflict, bringing assistance to civilians, the wounded, and prisoners of war. The British Society is one of 181 national organisations that form the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which, along with the International Committee of the Red Cross, make up the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The Committee's role is governed by the 1949 Geneva Conventions. The inspiration behind the Movement, Henry Dunant, was a prime mover behind the original Geneva Convention of 1864. The British Society began as the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War, being reformed into its current incarnation in 1905. The Society is also one of the member agencies of the Disasters Emergency Committee.
