| Background Information | The Aberfan Disaster Fund was formed in response to the 1966 Aberfan disaster, when a waste tip from Merthyr Vale Colliery slid down the mountainside and engulfed buildings including Pantglas Junior School, killing 144 people in all, and 116 children. The Fund raised £1.75m in three months, and was then charged with the appropriate distribution of these funds. It is now concerned more generally with benefiting the inhabitants of Aberfan.
