| Background Information | Honouring the celebrated Scottish economist, the Adam Smith Club was formed in 1868 by Charles Gairdner, inspired by a London-based organisation of the same name. The club met regularly, and acted as a forum for those interested in political economy, with members drawn from the staff of Glasgow University. The club lapsed between 1897 and 1907, and again between 1914 and 1920, but was still active into the 1990s. Source: www.archives.gla.ac.uk |
