| Background Information | The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) is a conservation charity (no. 261009) facilitating a practical, local volunteer contribution to protecting the environment. It was established as the Conservation Corps by Brigadier Armstrong, on the initiative of the Council for Nature. The body expanded in the 1960s, becoming independent, and adopting the current name, in 1970. It currently (2006) co-ordinates 2,225 local groups, and boasts 140,000 volunteers.
