| Background Information | The Irish Council of Churches is an ecumenical umbrella body for Christian denominations in Ireland. Alongside the coordination of ecumenism and evangelism, the Council has taken a particular interest in the peace process in Northern Ireland, along with work on other social issues, and building a relationship with the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. Together with its sister bodies in Wales, Scotland and England, it is a member of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI), an organisational form that emerged in the wake of the 1987 Swanwick Declaration. At its foundation, the Council brought together existing joint committees of Irish churches, as recommended by the 1920 Lambeth Conference. Sources: www.irishchurches.org; www.ireland.anglican.org |
