Background Information

Established by George Woodcock and Herbert Read, and with supporters including Harold Laski, Bertrand Russell and George Orwell, the Freedom Defence Committee was a civil liberties body, involved particularly in the defence of deserters and ex-service men facing political prosecution. The organisation was originally formed in order to defend the editors of the anarchist periodical War Commentary. Source: www.iisg.nl
