| Background Information | The BEWC, the working name of the Britain-Russia Centre and the British East West Centre, describes itself as "the longest established UK non-government organisation dedicated to working with Russia and the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)." Originally established as the Great Britain-USSR Association, in order to support British contact with the Soviet Union, the organisation acted as a forum for research and expertise, involving specialists, politicians and diplomats. The current organisational structure was adopted following the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. In 2001, the Centre also played a role in the establishment of the GB-Russia Society. Company no. 696337. Sources: www.bewc.org; http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk |
