| Background Information | The International Council of Women (ICW) seeks, in its own words, "to unite National Councils of Women's non-governmental organisations from all parts of the world for action to improve the status of women and the well-being of society." The ICW works across a broad area, promoting equality and human rights generally, alongside international peace and cooperation, and sustainable development. The ICW has its roots in the Washington conference of 1888, chaired by Susan B Anthony, which brought together representatives of 53 national women's organisations, with an original focus on equal rights in education, the workplace, and in the realm of public morality.
