| Background Information | The Committee of 100 emerged out of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), and more specifically out of the tension within that movement about the use of civil disobedience and non-violent direct action in the pursuit of its goals. Founded by Bertrand Russell and Ralph Schoenman, amongst others, the Committee staged a series of high-profile direct-action protests in the early 1960s, including sit-downs in Whitehall, Trafalgar Square and outside the Holy Loch naval base, leading to the arrest and imprisonment of participants, including 89-year-old Russell.
