The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a sustainable development research body, working in partnership with governments and organisations across the developing world. It currently concentrates its work in the five areas of natural resources, climate change, human settlements, sustainable markets and governance. Originally established by the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies of Colorado, in order to prepare for the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, the name change reflected the emergent Stockholm consensus between the developed and developing world, around the need for sustainable development.
