In its own words, "the RAF Association (RAFA) provides comradeship, welfare and care for current and former members of the RAF", with a particular focus on "friendship and welfare support to serving and ex-serving members of the RAF and their families." A major charity, the RAFA also provides convalescent accommodation, in association with its sister charity, the RAF Benevolent Fund. The current organisation came into being with the 1941 merger of the Women?s Royal Air Force Old Comrades Association (established in 1919), and the Comrades of the Royal Air Forces, a body formed in 1929 in order to provide a degree of unity to the many associations for former RAF personnel that had sprung up since the end of World War One.
