| Background Information | The Union of Physically Impaired Against Segregation (UPIAS) was a disability rights group, founded by writer and activist Paul Hunt, following the response to a letter he wrote to the Guardian newspaper condemning the experience of disabled people in institutional care. Alongside promoting a self-led model of disability action, UPIAS also argued for the 'social model' of disability in contrast to the 'medical model', that disability was a function of society's unwillingness to accommodate physical impairment, rather than being a direct result of the impairment itself. UPIAS was one of the two organisations to emerge from the collapse of the Disablement Income Group, the other being the Disability Alliance. It also played a major role in the British Council of Organisations of Disabled People.
