| Background Information | Founded by the Royal College of Physicians, ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) describes itself as "a campaigning public health charity [no. 262067] working for a comprehensive societal response to tobacco aimed at achieving a sharp reduction and eventual elimination of the health problems caused by tobacco." It seeks a much greater societal, and particularly governmental, effort in this area. Among its goals are an advertising ban, increased tobacco taxes, greater efforts towards both cessation and the protection of non-smokers, and providing more health information to smokers.
