| Background Information | Abortion Rights campaigns for free access to abortions in the UK, highlighting what it sees as the obstructions inherent in the current system, regulated by the 1967 Abortion Act, i.e. the need for women to gain the approval of two doctors, on the grounds on physical or mental health, before an abortion can take place. Abortion Rights resulted from the 2003 merger of the National Abortion Campaign (NAC) and the Abortion Law Reform Association (ARLA). ARLA was formed in 1936 in response to the dangers posed by 'back-street' abortions, while the more radical, feminist NAC was formed in 1975.
