| Background Information | Groundwork UK, the working name of the Federation of Groundwork Trusts, is the umbrella organisation for Groundwork Trusts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. These trusts are local partnerships of the public, private and voluntary sectors, aiming at the development of sustainable communities, improving the local environment for the benefit of both people and businesses. The organisation emerged out of the Countryside Commission as the UFEX80 scheme to regenerate neglected urban fringe areas. This was encouraged by the Department of the Environment under Michael Heseltine, with the first scheme starting on Merseyside in 1981. From 1990, the focus broadened to embrace inner cities and town centres. Charity no. 291558, company no. 01900511. Sources: http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk; www.groundwork.org.uk |
