Background InformationStamp Out Poverty is an international development campaign group, seeking additional revenue sources to meet the challenge of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals, including the halving of global poverty by 2015. The principal campaign goal is the introduction of a Sterling Stamp Duty, set at 0.005%, levied on international financial transactions. (Such measures are commonly grouped under the heading 'Tobin Tax', after the proposals of economist James Tobin to levy a 1% charge on currency transactions, albeit for different purposes than those pursued by Stamp Out Poverty.) A coalition of unions, international development organisations and other groups (see below), Stamp Out Poverty was established by War on Want in 2002, absorbing the work of the Tobin Tax network.
