| Background Information | The International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals (IAAPEA) was established to protest and campaign against experiments, testing, vivisection and other procedures performed on laboratory animals. It organised the "world day for laboratory animals" in 1979, which subsequently became (and continues to be) an annual event, focussing the world's attention on the plight of laboratory animals. IAAPEA organises and finances investigative work on animal experimentation (including obtaining photographic evidence) and funds medical research into cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses that does not resort to such procedures. IAAPEA remains the only organisation of its kind to enjoy consultative status with the UN (http://www.iaapea.com/)
