| Background Information | The Commonwealth Day Movement, known for the majority of its existence as the Empire Day Movement, promoted the observance of Empire/Commonwealth day (the name of the day was changed by the Macmillan Government in 1958 to reflect the evolution of the British Empire into the Commonwealth). The day itself, a manifestation of Edwardian patriotism, was established by the Earl of Meath, and was observed in schools and the wider community, but experienced a sharp decline in popularity following World War II.
