| Background Information | The Forward Britain Movement (FBM) was a campaign group with links to the British Labour party, formed against the backdrop of Harold Macmillan's application for Britain to join the European Economic Community, and vigorously opposed to British membership. FBM was directed by Richard Briginshaw, general secretary of the National Union of Operative Printers, Graphical and Media Personnel, and with Labour party member and future MP Ron Leighton as Secretary. While not a party organisation, Forward Britain seems to have set out initially to woo progressive thought, and then developed into a cross/non-party body before ceasing to exist in 1964. The group's propaganda came to concentrate heavily on the themes of national independence and sovereignty, unlike the mainstream of Labour party euroscepticism. |
