| Background Information | Scottish Women's Aid is the co-ordinating body for the refuges and support services for female and child victims of domestic violence, which became more numerous with the advent of second-wave feminism in the 1970s. The first Scottish refuges were established in Edinburgh and Glasgow, following visits by women's liberation activists to a project in Chiswick, London. Scottish women's aid groups combined into the present organisation three years later. Alongside providing support for individual refuges, campaigning and lobbying, and providing advice and support for victims of domestic violence more generally, the organisation also works to raise public awareness of domestic violence. Charity no. SC001099. Sources: www.womensaid.org.uk; www.scottishwomensaid.co.uk |
