| Background Information | ActionAid began life as a small-scale child-sponsorship organisation, operating in India and Kenya. After dramatic expansion in the 1970s and 1980s, it is now a development agency working in 42 countries, with a strong operational focus on working with local partners and aid recipients. ActionAid's priorities are women's rights, the right to education, human security, food and education, and the fight against HIV/AIDS. ActionAid is the UK's third largest development agency, and works in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. The charity is also one of the member agencies of the Disasters Emergency Committee.
