| Background Information | The Scottish Green Party is a political party that aims to put ecological concerns at the heart of political decision-making. Established in 1979, under the umbrella of what was then the UK-wide Ecology Party (now the Green Party), the Scottish party became an independent entity in 1990. Electorally, it has fared better than its sister party south of the border, due to the proportional voting system supporting Scottish devolution. In the 1999 elections to the new Scottish Parliament, Robin Harper became the first UK parliamentarian to win a seat for a Green party. In 2003, the party extended their representation to an impressive seven seats, out of a Parliament of 129, on 6.9% of the vote.
