DescriptionRecords of the BNTL form part of the Livesey Collection held at the University of Central Lancashire Library. "The Livesey Collection, of the British National Temperance League (BNTL), consists of over 5,000 books, journals, manuscripts, tracts, images and other material and objects, concentrating on the temperance movement of the nineteenth and early twentieth century." The records also "include the annual conferences of the British Temperance League 1835 - 1940 and the proceedings of the Executive/General Committee of the National Temperance League 1856 - 1928. A range of pledge books, unfortunately the majority blank, are also held, along with the diary of Samuel Sims, an agent of the National Temperance League in the 1880s." Additional informationThe BNTL also keep a number of records at their headquarters: they consist of records going back to the 1950's when the amalgamation of the British Temperence League and the National Temperace League took place. These records relate to minutes and correspondence. BNTL also has records relating to Eastwood Grange which was a Temperance Conference Centre which closed in approximately 1989. These records again relate to minutes and information about various summer schools and courses which took place at the centre. Researchers should note that the Sheffield branch records of the BNTL (1908-26: records, including correspondence and reports, and Sheffield Women's Auxiliary, 1933-65: cradle roll) have been placed in Sheffield Archives (source: NRA).
