| Background Information | The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) is leading medical learned society, describing its aims as "to provide a broad range of educational activities and opportunities for doctors, dentists and veterinary surgeons, including students of these disciplines, and for allied healthcare professionals [and] to promote an exchange of information and ideas on the science, practice and organisation of medicine, both within the health professions and with responsible and informed public opinion." Although the current organisation only came about in 1907, through a merger of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society (RMCS) and other smaller bodies, its roots go back a century earlier. The RMCS was originally formed as a group for those dissenting from Dr James Sims' leadership of the Medical Society of London. The RSM also provides the secretariat for the Association for Litigation and Risk Managers (ALARM), and the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH). Charity no. 206219, company no. RC000525. Source: www.rsm.ac.uk |
