The Guild was founded in 1887 by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland on the initiative of A. H. Charteris. In its own words, "The Church of Scotland Guild is a movement within the Church of Scotland which invites and encourages both women and men to commit their lives to Jesus Christ and enables them to express their faith in worship, prayer and action". The Guild is also involved in project works such as campaigning against 'Human Trafficking'. It is one of Scotland's largest voluntary organisations.
