| Background Information | The Conservative Women's Organisation (CWO) has roots back in the 1920s when the Party boasted some one million women members and when the first women's conservative conference was held. Prominent Conservative women include Nancy Astor (the first woman to take a seat in the House of Commons) and, of course, Margaret Thatcher (the first, and only, woman leader of any mainstream political party and Prime Minister of Britain). In its 21st century role CWO is an organisation for women whose beliefs and values are broadly in sympathy with David Cameron's modern Conservative Party. It aims to encourage more women into Parliament and advises the Party on issues afftecting women supporters (including health, education, caring, domestic violence and global women's concerns) bringing these to the forefront of political debate and policy making (source: http://www.conservativewomen.org.uk/default.asp; Baberis, McHugh and Tyldesley, 2000, pp53, entry 94) |
